So you have decided to start streaming, good for you, but you don’t want to spend a lot of money on things you might not need if that doesn’t work out. There are other ways for you to replace a camera or a mic.

One of these ways is using your phone as a camera or a mic. This would be better if you can use a slightly older phone so you don’t have to worry about deteriorating your phone’s battery. If you use an older phone, there can be problems regarding the camera and mic quality, so you have to decide what you can tolerate. This method works with both Android and iPhones, so you don’t have to worry about what phone you have, as long as it is relatively new.

Android!

For an android phone, you can use an app called IP Webcam. After the download is done, open the app and find “Start Server.” Once the server is up and running, you will see an IP address shown in the bottom side of the screen, copy and paste that to a browser and also paste it to the streaming software of your choice as a Browser source, and don’t forget to add /video after the IP. You can also enable the “Refresh browser when the scene becomes active” by doing that, you can reset the feed quickly if you want to. Another thing you might wish to change is the resolution of the video; 720p will be more than enough for an average streamer. You can also lower the stream quality, so you don’t overwork your phone.

As for the mic, you can go to the advanced settings and copy the Opus audio format. You then create a Media source on your streaming software and paste it there; you might need to uncheck “Local file” for you to be able to see the field you need to paste it.

iPhone!

As for iOS, you have to install an app called DroidCam on your phone and your PC. The IP you get from the phone app, you need to put it on the PC app. After that, you can add the camera as a Video Capture device; with DroidCam, the quality is set at 480p. At first, you can change that by running their HD Mode app as admin and select a higher quality.

The mic is detected as an audio source directly when you use this app, so you have to go to the Audio settings and change it to that.

Filters!

Phone microphones are sometimes not the best out there, especially for this kind of use, so you are going to need to implement a few filters on them. Just a reminder that you will need to look at the settings for these filters with your setup, since the mic quality, phone distance, and many more reasons are going to impact on the performance.

Among the best filters you can use: Gain this will help if the mic volume is low. Noise Suppression, as the name says this will help with the noise, you might have in the background. Compressor is going to help you deal with multiple audio sources. Noise Gain, you can use this one to remove all the noise that will come from the keyboard.

And that’s it, you can use your phone now as a camera and a mic, but one thing to keep in mind is that when the opportunity to upgrade them becomes available, please do so.
